Summer Workshop Series 2014 – Singing Hildegard – The Embodied Voice
The intention of this series is to bring professional and trained semi-professional singers together to learn something refreshingly new, and old. Previous knowledge of medieval notation is appreciated but not required. Amy Green will lead us in singing, and we will begin by following. The notation style used in Hildegard’s manuscripts reads intuitively for any singer familiar with modern notation, when guided by an expert. We will also spend time working on physical embodiment for vocal performance, relating contemporary somatic practices to Hildegard’s music, poetry, and healing treatises. Appropriate for serious vocalists young and old, experienced or novice. We expect to sing through many chants during the course of the weekend, but also to work carefully and repeatedly on several of them.
This will be a beautiful weekend!
Amy Green leads an introductory session Friday July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Boulder. Free and open to the public. A short talk on the historical aspect of the music will be followed by a demonstration of the singing. Then everyone will have the opportunity to sing together from facsimiles of manuscripts compiled shortly before and after Hildegard’s death in 1179.
In the spirit of the oral tradition of medieval music transmission, the songs will be studied through imitation, with minimal theoretical discussion. In order to gain a visceral feeling of the modes, simple exercises from medieval sources will be used as a warm up.
Participation in the Denver weekend intensive requires a $25 fee for Saturday only, and a $40 fee for Saturday and Sunday. After registration participants will receive digital files of the pieces to be worked on, in original and modern transcription for course preparation. Due to the last minute change of dates for this event, we have dropped the previously published price. We hope you’ll join us!
