A Weekend Gregorian Chant Practicum with Christopher Fülling
World Vocal Traditions: Medieval Roots - Gregorian Chant II
Singers from all traditions and all walks of life will benefit from this immersive experience in singing and Medieval ritual. Participants should attend Gregorian Chant I - Singing From the Neumes (in either Boulder or Denver) or be experienced in singing medieval square-note musical notation.
Taking place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons the first weekend in May, the group will dive more deeply into a few pieces of more florid chant repertoire to develop vocal lines and compelling choral performance and then gain a sense of its liturgical context through learning and celebrating the full, though brief, Compline rite. . Singers with Church jobs on Sunday please contact us if you can't make 1pm sharp (we can be flexible).
Each day of the intensive will balance meditation and somatic practice, practical instruction on interpretation, and active performance of music and ritual. Techniques learned will be generally applicable to chant, life, and other musical forms.
About Compline
"Compline tends to be a contemplative Office that emphasizes spiritual peace. In many monasteries it is the custom to begin the "Great Silence" after Compline, during which the whole community, including guests, observes silence throughout the night until the morning service the next day" (Wikipedia). We will end each day with a performance of Compline. On Sunday, we will invite an audience.
About Christopher
Christopher Fülling is a highly-trained and experienced singer of Gregorian chant, and will share with us "state-of -the-practice" approaches and interpretation that will be valuable for experienced chant singers as well as serious vocal practitioners from other traditions.
