An Evening Workshop with Christopher Fülling
World Vocal Traditions: Medieval Roots - Gregorian Chant I
This two-hour evening workshop will take place at The Integral Center in Boulder. Christopher will lead singers in reading and singing Gregorian chant from "neumes" - the square musical notation of the middle ages, famously codified by the monks at the Abbey of Solesmes for the Liber Usualis. You DO NOT NEED to be experienced at square-note (neume) singing. But you should be comfortable singing and have some familiarity with written music.

Why are we "singing from the neumes"?
Neumes are a more expressive, and some would say more accurate means of conveying vocal music than the modern notation that developed for scoring instrumental music. Singing from the neumes changes how we approach the music, and deepens our experience in a way that can then inform our other vocal practices.
Who is the instructor?
Christopher Fülling is a highly-trained and experienced singer of Gregorian chant, and will share with us "state-of -the-practice" approaches and interpretation that will be valuable for experienced chant singers as well as early music vocalists, jazz musicians, and choral singers who've never sung chant before.
