Opportunities at Inventing Earth

Inventing Earth has has a range of opportunities for administrators, technical staff, artists, musicians and singers.

Inventing Earth Positions

We are seeking both administrative as well as artistic collaborators. Please note that administrative positions may in some cases need to be filled by working artists.

These positions will begin as internships or partially funded collaborations between the individuals and Inventing Earth on a short-term, single-project basis. Once it is clear that the collaboration is likely to “have legs”, so to speak, Inventing Earth will focus intensively on developing the funding sources and strategy to expand the positions into professional positions. Individuals should be able and willing to teach or work in other fields in the community while the professional relationship with Inventing Earth is developing.

Open positions:
  • Oma Dance Theatre. We expect this position to be filled initially by a working dancer with professional performance experience, who can combine entrepreneurial startup energy with grounded artistic performance. Position reports to Artistic Director of Inventing Earth (Mary Lin) who would also serve as a collaborator. This director will be highly organized and grounded, able to manage schedules and handle administrative tasks including some bookkeeping, scheduling, and grant writing support. Must be computer/internet literate and savvy. Will be required to schedule and teach company classes and to serve as point person in organizing and producing shows. Experience with self-directed, collaborative, and experiential projects also valued.

Artistic requirements include:

  • Experience as a professional modern or contemporary dancer
  • Openness to dance as continuum from narrative to abstract dance medium
  • Experience with interdisciplinary performing arts
  • Vocal, acting, storytelling, and technical theatre experience - must be comfortable performing in these realms even if skills are not as developed as movement practice
  • Experience with somatic approaches to performing arts and the desire/motivation to expand/explore these aspects of one’s practice. Experiential anatomy and physiology/Bodymind Centering a huge plus
  • Openness to if not direct experience with Theatre of the Oppressed and/or Playback Theatre and/or guerilla theatre approaches to community theatremaking

A Call to Arts

Inventing Earth was founded on the premise that Artists have a crucial role in helping society to evolve, and that we do so by changing consciousness. Thus Inventing Earth seeks means by which to seed leading-edge visions and propositions into the imagination of humanity. This can best be manifested, we believe, by groups of artists, scientists, and other cultural creatives working in collaboration to dream of and manifest ingenious artistic forms and projects.

Inventing Earth promotes and espouses a level-headed approach to arts-as-business and artists-as-businesspeople. It’s notoriously hard to make a living as an artist in many developed nations. Funding for the arts changes constantly and seems to be ever more limited in availability from traditional sources.

However, interdisciplinary projects with large vision, run as collaborations between individuals and organizations, continue to enjoy both public and private support. IE Founders Ben Sargent and Mary Lin bring decades of experience in business, including several startups, and the entrepreneurial spirit that artists need in order to develop and survive. With the hiring of Aurora Lee, MBA, as Executive Director (link to PR or bio page), we’ve now begun building the professional staff that will manage the operations and fundraising efforts for Inventing Earth.

The Inventing Earth Learning Community Model

Inventing Earth believes that the new earth will be populated with engaged, vibrant, nested levels of creative community. Education and creative learning will be facilitated by a mentorship model and a collaborative shared learning model working in parallel and synergy. As a demonstrating microcosom of this model, Inventing Earth expects that the enterpreneurial individuals who join forces with the group will bring professional level skills that will be shared in both formal and informal structures

Open artistic positions:

  • Managing Director, Oma Dance Theatre.

  • Musicians for the opera and world music performing troupe (Myszalta). We are seeking professional, classically-trained musicians and vocalists ready to move into a different space, professionally and artistically.

  • Dancers with professional performance experience in contemporary/modern disciplines who have incorporated somatic and contemplative (meditation and spiritual) disciplines into their practices.

  • Classically trained (opera, early music) vocalists with an openness to expanding their practice with somatic and contemplative approaches

  • Theatre production (lights, set, costuming) professionals with experience in and an understanding of Maker and poor theatre approaches and aesthetic
