Inventing Earth began operations in 2010 by Mary Lin and Ben Sargent with the intention of expanding human understanding of creativity to include both art and science; individual, collective, and collaborative social, cultural, and artistic processes; and the activities of other species and the natural world. The recognition and inclusion of personal and individual experiences and actions, plus an understanding of larger processes and systems, all from multiple disciplines and points of view, demonstrates the integral root of Inventing Earth (IE).

IE recognizes and encourages the development of cultural and artistic collaborations that support and promote the new ideas which will result in an emergent, sustainable, and truly diverse new world. IE seeks to hold up the mirror to Earth as it reinvents itself, and to cultivate those gems of ideational and actual biological diversity from which a healthy, balanced new earth will emerge. In this way, it is like a laboratory, a gestational alembic, or a cloistered garden of ideas.

Creativity and innovation are traits shared by many species.

Intentional, volitional, problem-solving, development and passing along of cultural activities, trends, habits, and cultural norms – many species exhibit individual creativity as well cultural innovation.

Life recreates itself endlessly in the variety as demonstrated in the diversity of species. One predictor of success in both human and non-human communities is the diversity found within them. This is true looking at DNA, morphology within a species, cultural creativity within a society, and economic activities within a market, or the number species within an ecosystem– at many levels. And in the human realm, the ability to reproduce and pass along a legacy through the medium of cultural ideas brings a new creativity. Everything humans do is also found in non-human species, but humans take things to an abstracted level. Because we have this ability to abstract, we can thoughtfully include multiple species and complex systems in creative processes and works.

IE seeks to expand an understanding of creativity, to include the sciences, other species, and the natural world. With the inclusion of the personal and individual experiences and actions, and an understanding of the larger processes and systems, from multiple disciplines and points of view, IE is an integral organization.

Towards this end, Inventing Earth supports innovative, integral works across many disciplines and human cultures. Inventing Earth initiatives contribute to the emergence of:
